Torchwood - End of Days
Episode 113 first broadcast on BBC3 1st January 2007

Opening the rift has consequences that Owen is beginning to find out about. The black death turns up in a Cardiff hospital, a Roman Centurion is yelling latin from a prison cell and a number of past characters appear to the Torchwood team trying to convince them to open the rift.

Bilis Manger appears to Gwen for a few seconds . He says "I'm sorry."

Owen has a fight with Jack over the rift problem and is fired. He is sent on his way and sees a vision of Diane in the bar telling him to open the rift.

Gwen and Jack track Bilis down at his Clock repair shop where Jack quickly realises that Bilis is travelling into the past to pick up time pieces and sell them in the present for a considerable profit. (Which is a nice nod to Evil of the Daleks. Even the ticking sounds similar. No Daleks, though.)

Bilis appears again and tells Jack and Gwen that the only way to get rid of the problems is to open the rift completely and everything that didn't belong there would be sucked back in. He also shows Gwen what will happen to Rys, her boyfriend. Rys will die from stab wounds in a very short time.

Immediately she rushes home, knocks Rys out and puts him in a cell in Torchwood. Unfortunately she didn't know who was actually going to kill him and he is stabbed and killed in the corridors of the cell, by Bilis.

Bilis continues to manipulate the Torchwood team until it is unlikely that any of them, except Jack, won't open the rift. They gang up on Jack and there is a confrontation which leads to Owen shooting Jack through the head, dead.

They try and activate the Rift opening machinery and find that the retina scans of all the Torchwood team are needed. They scan Jack's dead eyes then open the rift, just as Jack comes to life again.

Rys body disappears from the autopsy table, the Roman Centurian in the cell disappears and everyone returns to their own time. Except there's something wrong.

They rush out to see a large Beast creature, the son of the Beast that was in the Doctor Who episode The Impossible Planet and The Satan Pit, smashing through Cardiff, destroying buildings. Its shadow sucking the life out of anyone who touches it.

Beast Junior has been brought back by Bilis. It had been chained below the rift for eternity and now it was awake.

Jack knows what he has to do and gets Gwen to drive him close to the creature. She drives away and Jack confronts the Godzilla, King Kong size devil spawn. Because Jack has an unlimited supply of life, the creature of death cannot deal with Jack's life force and collapses, dies and dissolves, leaving Jack dead.

Jack's body is put on a gurney and Gwen waits over him while the others get on with their jobs. Gwen waits and watches for at least 3 days. Eventually she decides he is not coming back and she kisses him on the lips. As she walks away, Jack says "thank you" and gets up.

Everyone is pleased to see that Jack has returned from the dead and, considering Jack helped kill Ianto's girlfriend I was surprised to see him give Jack a passionate kiss on the lips. Jack tells Owen he forgives him and Owen cries into Jack's arms.

Later, Gwen asks Jack what would have tempted him to open the rift. He says, "The right kind of Doctor"

Suddenly, the hand in the box starts to shake and a wheezing, groaning noise fills the air. Jack's face lights up as he looks around.

Gwen and the rest of the Torchwood team are in their rooms when they hear the noise but, by the time they get to where Jack had been standing, he was gone. "Something's taken Jack" says Gwen.

Well, what an episode. Satan's son savages Cardiff. Bilis savages Rys. Owen savages Jack. Gwen tries to savage Owen. Only Toshiko seems to be the only one not being savaged.

I enjoyed this episode purely because it was for the fans. This was SO for the fans. I really don't have much more to say about it besides the fact that the acting was convincing, the special effects were great, and I loved the Roman soldier speaking Latin. Now I don't know any Latin at all but any actor who can yell Latin convincingly has my vote!

So, do people remember what happened? If time went back a bit, does that mean that Gwen never went to the Police Station? Does it matter?

9 out of 10.
