Doctor Who Last of the Timelords Episode 313. Written by Russell T Davies
First Broadcast on the BBC 300607. Story number 191. Extra long episode.
Starring David Tennant as the Doctor and Freema Agyeman as Martha Jones. Description and review.

One year later. The famous Martha Jones is travelling the world, getting help and gathering support.

She comes ashore at an English beach and is met by Tom Milligan who helps her to meet Professor Dogherty.

The Doctor is still old and in a wheel chair. He sleeps in a tent with a bowl marked dog next to it. Martha's family are slaves to the Master. Jack is chained up in another room.

Martha and Tom come across shipyards full of black hole powered rockets ready for take off.

At a prearranged signal the gang on the Valiant cause a distraction when the Master takes off his coat for a massage, and the Doctor grabs the Master's screwdriver. It's isomorphic so the it doesn't work on the Master.

The Master knows that Martha is going to be watching as he knows she's in England. The Master disables the Doctor's ability to regenerate and turns him into a tiny creature. Martha knows there's still hope while the Doctor's still alive.

Martha and Tom meet Dogherty and they discuss the Archangel mobile phone network which is still broadcasting a telephathic signal to make people scared. Martha has a disk that enables them to work out how to capture one of the Toclafane.

Martha's family are now incarcerated with Jack and they all swear to kill the Master.

Dogherty open the Toclafane sphere and find out that there is a human brain inside from 100 trillion years in the future with a shared telephathic memory. They remember Martha Jones and how she helped them go to Utopia. Dogherty tells the sphere that it's a paradox and the future humans coming back in time to kill their ancestors would cancel them out. Martha explains that the TARDIS has been converted into a paradox machine to allow history to change. Tom shoots the face in the sphere when it says it enjoyed killing humans.

Martha explains to Dogherty that she has been travelling the world looking for the parts for a gun that kills timelords. She has one part to get which is in a Unit base nearby.

The Master explains that he took his wife to the end of the universe to see the dying humans in Utopia where there was no solution to the end.

Tom and Martha head to a safe house before their plan to go to a unit base. Dogherty calls and reports to the Master's network in return for her son.

Martha tells her story of the Doctor to the many people in the house. But the Master and some soldiers arrive and she has to face him. The Master destroys the bag with the gun in it. He shoots a heroic Tom then takes her back up to the Valiant.

She faces him in the Valiant with family and the Doctor watching. She kneels and the Master starts the clock to countdown to the warships leaving. He aims his gun at her and says that Martha will die when the clock reaches 0.

Tick...tick...tick

Okay. You can stop reading now. Really. Are you sure you really want to know the ending? Okay. Here goes.

The Master explains to Martha his plans. The rocket fleet gets ready to blast off. Spheres are waiting in orbit ready to take over the galaxy.

"We'll fly and blaze and slice."

The Master says that Martha will die when the countdown reaches zero.

Martha's family and Jack are in the room watching. The Doctor is a wizened creature in a bird cage.

Martha starts to laugh.

She explains that the gun scattered across the world was just a ruse to get her there at the right time. She explains that she had been travelling, telling the story of the Doctor, creating a situation where everyone in the world would say the Doctor's name and use the power of faith and hope, augmented by the energy of the archangel satellite network, to bring the Doctor back. Just as she completes her story everyone in the world starts saying the Doctor's name and as he'd had a year to connect with the psychic network he uses this power to dissolve the bird cage and rejuvenate himself.

The Master tries to kill him but the energy surrounding the Doctor allows him to deflect the laser bolts and throw the laser screwdriver across the room.

The Doctor holds the Master and tells him that he forgives him.

The spheres surrounding the Earth suddenly scream back to protect the paradox device and the Doctor yells at Jack to destroy it.

The Master activates the teleport device that he'd taken off Martha and disappears with the Doctor to a quarry for their final showdown.

The Master holds in his hand the blackhole converter and can activate all the rockets in the world at once, destroying the planet.

Jack rushes into the room containing the Police Box and knows he's about to be cut up by several Toclafane.

But the Doctor knows the Master's secret. He can never destroy something if it means destroying himself.

Jack destroys the Paradox machine and time starts reversing.

The Doctor and the Master rematerialise on board the Valiant as the Toclafane disappear and the weather and the world rushes back a year.

Francine tries to kill the Master but the Doctor prevents her then says that he's his responsibility and will keep him locked up in the TARDIS.

When we first saw The Master's wife at the beginning of this episode, she had a red bruise under one eye which suggested that she'd been beaten up by the Master. We also had the scene where she turned away in despair and disgust when the Master kissed her then the scene when she says 'Doctor' along with all the others. So I was certainly expecting her to do something to the Master at this point.

The Master is shot in the stomach by his wife. The Doctor grabs him in his arms and holds him and with tears in his eyes tells him that he has to regenerate as they're the last of their kind. The Master says no, and dies.

The Doctor wails and then we see him lighting the bonfire and the Master's wrapped body burning.

The Doctor, Martha and Jack are in Cardiff saying goodbye to Jack when he decides to ask what is going to happen to him if he keeps getting older but not dying. What's he going to look like in a million years? The Doctor says he doesn't know. Then Jack says that it was really a vanity thing and that he used to live in the Boe-sheen peninsula. He'd been a poster boy and got his face put everywhere. The face of Boe they used to call him!!! (I can just imagine Russell T Davies sitting there and typing that thinking "HAH! Deal with it!")

Martha says goodbye to the Doctor. She has a family to take care of now and can't travel with the Doctor for awhile as her family is suffering. But she does give him her mobile and tells her she'll call him.

We cut to the Master's ashes. NB: The Master's ashes have been carried in the Doctor's TARDIS before and the Master came back so it was no surprise that some red fingernails picked up his ring from the ashes to the sound of the Master's laughter. Was it his wife? Was it someone played by Joanna Lumley? We really need to have a female Master!

The Doctor starts to dematerialise all by himself when suddenly the Titanic bursts through the side of the console room!

To be continued in Voyage to the Damned.
