Please don't read this review if you don't want the surprises ruined. As a Doctor Who fan I'm eager to find out any information about upcoming episodes, either on the grapevine or through official channels. So, when the episode eventually airs, I'm seldom surprised. Gridlock started off as your standard Doctor Who story. The Doctor and Martha go to the future. Martha gets kidnapped and the Doctor tries to find her. I began getting frustrated with this episode early on when we kept seeing completely human faces on the motorway. I remember the episode New Earth of course but still, 5 billion years of evolution and everyone still looks human? Come on! And then the kittens joke. Alright, already! I also could not believe some of the cars on the motorway had been travelling for 20 years. How patient are these people? Haven't they heard of road rage? What about getting out and walking? But then things got interesting. While investigating some drug dealers in the slums of New New York Martha is kidnapped because some drivers needed a third person to get into the fast lane. The Doctor chases after them but ends up looking over the motorway. He starts choking on the fumes and a kindly cat pilot lets him in. He asks how long to the next stop and is told, about 6 months. He needs to track Martha quicker than that and gets help through the friends list of the cat pilot. One of the ladies on the list is a car spotter and kept records of any recent cars entering the motorway. She was able to tell the Doctor the exact place to go so he opened the bottom of the car he's in and dropped to the next car, opened the top hatch with his sonic screwdriver and went through. Everyone was surprised but certainly not angry and he was able to jump down several levels of the motorway this way. (Loved the Japanese car) While this is happening Martha's in another car heading for the fast lane. They find that the way is blocked and there's no way out. Strange noises are heard and stories are told about cars on the motorway that disappear, eaten by whatever is down below. The Doctor gets to the lowest car and manages to clear some air by tapping into the ventilation system. He gets to see the creatures below and this is when I say that all plot holes are forgiven. This is also when I say that the surprise was definitely worth staying a surprise. If you really want to know what creatures are hiding below, and you already know the entire history of Doctor Who, then you can click here and get pleasantly surprised - Gridlock Review Old notes - Saxon is your son - The Master is alive - Martha Jones will die It's unlikely the Face of Boe is going to be talking about something that affects the past. It's more likely to affect the Doctor's future. The episode also contains references to the classic series which only long term Doctor Who fans will recognise. The story concentrates on faith and trust in others so it is both an adventure story and a chick flick! Sounds like fun.
