Doctor Who Evolution of the Daleks Episode 305. Written by Helen Raynor
First Broadcast on the BBC 280507. Story number 185
Starring David Tennant as the Doctor and Freema Agyeman as Martha Jones. Description and review.
After the appalling first episode I had hoped that this would be an improvement.

As Martha is about to meet her doom the Doctor starts a radio playing in the hope of bringing Sec to his human senses.

The Doctor walks into the midst of the Daleks and they don't kill him. The Doctor activates the radio with his sonic screwdriver and knocks out the Daleks. Sec feels pain for the first time in thousands of years.

Everyone escapes to Hooverville. The pigs attack and everyone shoots their guns to ward them off.

3 flying Daleks attack, exterminating some of the Hoovervillians. Then there is a standoff and the leader gives an impassioned speech before being exterminated.

The Doctor then gives an emotional plea to the Daleks to exterminate him but Sec stops it.

Sec calls the Doctor back to the base. The Doctor surreptiously hands Martha the psychic paper and she tries to figure out what to do with it.

The Doctor confronts Sec who shows him their huge storehouse of human bodies with wiped minds, ready to be turned into Human/Dalek hybrids. They will inject the bodies with Dalek genes then use the power of a solar flare, lightning and the gamma radiation it creates to cause the DNA to be combined.

In episode one the Dalek says his homeworld was destroyed in a great war. Not the time war. This is a reference to Remembrance of the Daleks, the Dalek Civil War. In this episode they talk about how wrong their creator was. No mention of the word Davros but it suggests that Davros will make a comback sometime in the future.

The psychic paper enables Martha, Frank and Talullah to go to the top of the Empire State Building.

The Doctor decides to help Sec complete his plan and create a new humanised race of Daleks. He doesn't want genocide so he's going to give them another chance.

Martha and Talullah find that the Daleks have added Dalekanium to the top of the Empire State Building to help convert the power into gamma radiation.

The Daleks have actually started talking about how their leader is no longer a Dalek. They decide to rebel.

When the nutrients are injected into the human bodies something goes wrong with the system and the Daleks announce that they will become 100% Dalek, not hybrids.

The Doctor and Lazlo escape and get to the top of the Empire State Building and meet up with Martha and co who have discovered, from the designs, that there are new parts fitted to the aerial - Dalekanium.

The pigmen follow them up in the lift while the Doctor climbs to the top of the building to remove the Dalekanium and Martha builds a lightning conductor.

The Doctor loses his sonic screwdriver and can't get all the converters off the top of the building so he holds onto the pole and is struck by lightning, his Time Lord DNA being detected by the Dalek bumps and somehow being included in the Gamma Radiation Strike that issues downwards.

The pigmen are electrocuted by the lightning conductor Martha built.

Lazlo is not feeling well as he only has a few hours left to live. The pigmen have only a 2 week lifespan.

The Daleks revive the converted humans, who look completely human, and send them on their way with Dalek guns.

Martha finds the Doctor unconscious and gives him his sonic screwdriver.

They rush down to the theatre to have a final confrontation with the Daleks. One of the Daleks takes complete mental control of the human/dalek soldiers.

Lazlo keeps taking the attention away from the action to display how sick he's feeling. Alright, already!

The Doctor sends a sonic signal and Daleks converge on his location in the theatre. The group is surrounded by humans with Dalek DNA. Sec sits at the front with a chain and leaps up to defend the Doctor, being exterminated in the process.

The Daleks order the human hybrids, which have a bit of timelord DNA, to destroy the Doctor but they rebel and destroy the two Daleks instead. Then the controlling Dalek sends a kill signal and kills all the hybrids.

The Doctor goes to confront Dalek Kahn in his lair. The final real chat of the episode. It looks like the Doctor is going to try and talk him to death (see Remembrance of the Daleks) but then offers to help the last Dalek in existence.

Then Lazlo starts to die. Will the Doctor save them? Will we hear more really bad American accents? Will the Daleks return?

Er, yeah. 'fraid so.

This had a lot more action and guy stuff than the last episode so I can give it more points, and the Dalek incidental music was great. There were some good lines too. Unfortunately some of the Dalek lines were a bit grating (!) and some guys complaining about how they *feel* made it a bit cringeworthy in places. This was still very much a chick flick with Daleks in it so 5 out of 10.
