Doctor Who Daleks in Manhattan. Episode 304 written by Helen Raynor
First broadcast on the BBC 210407. Story number 185.
Starring David Tennant as the Doctor and Freema Agyeman as Martha Jones. Description and review.

No, no, no. I really hate fake American accents!

Okay. So, the episode opens with a girl in an angel costume getting ready for her performance as a showgirl.
(I'm not into cabaret, showgirls or singing but, nice butt!)
We then get to see her boyfriend (I'm not into love stories in Doctor Who) investigating a noise outside the theatre and the door behind him conveniently slams shut, which leads to him being captured by a pigman.
(I'm not into pigmen) This quickly sets up a tragedy within the plot.
The boyfriend was wearing clothes from the 1930s and it turns out that this is set in that period.
(I hate historicals, especially recent historicals)
The Doctor and Martha land the TARDIS near the Statue of Liberty and Martha finds a conveniently placed newspaper, just like in Dimensions in Time (is this a nod?) which tells them the exact date.
They find out that there is a mystery of missing people and decide to investigate. Conveniently they are near Hooverville and see a fight being broken up so that they conveniently get to meet the leader of the group without any hassle.

Then an excellent shot of building the Empire State Building that looked just like out of some pictures I've seen.

Some more bad accents leads us into the Empire State building where we're introduced to the Masters, otherwise known as the Daleks. Now things start to get interesting but we had to wait 10 minutes.

A great shot of the Daleks and their Ogrons, oops, I mean pigmen slaves come out of the lift. But then the Dalek doesn't exterminate, he talks.

The employee is taken away to be turned into a pigman and the Dalek talks some more.

Some more talking then on to the Doctor and Martha talking with the leader of Hooverville. And doing some more talking.

Um, bored now. This is a chick flick with Daleks in it.

Conveniently the boss who's building the Empire State Building turns up in Hooverville and needs some more people to work for him and is prepared to pay $1 a day for their help. The Doctor and Martha join and nothing is said about Martha being a girl.

There's no reason for the leader of the group to go down into the tunnels for a $1. He's needed in Hooverville. There's also no reason for the young kid to come with them.

Conveniently the Doctor stumbles on the remains of a jellyfish creature that was just lying around in the tunnels. He tries to figure out where it is from. I was hoping it was a Rutan as that would make the whole episode much more interesting but no, it was just another failed experiment like the ones in Genesis of the Daleks (a nod?)

Jump back to the boss talking to other employees with bad American accents and we see them picking up strips of Dalek casing to put on the roof. Ah, something interesting.

Great view of the Dalek and the boss looking out over Manhattan. Nice reference to New York being in existence in many forms throughout history (re: The Chase). Then it tells the guy running the operation about how he was from Skaro and that world is now gone. Lots more talking with the Daleks and the boss before he's taken down and given some old Dalek treatment, with some talking.

We find out that the Daleks are the Cult of Skaro that managed to escape the 21st century.

The boss starts telling the black Dalek that he really liked all the interesting images that the Dalek had sent into his mind. Then the Dalek says something that I was totally nodding in agreement to.
"Cease Talking!"
Finally, some sense at last.

The Doctor and co run into more pigmen as a group of pigmen come around the corner to capture them. They try and escape but the young kid is captured by the pigmen. The rest escape through a conveniently placed hole that opens conveniently inside the theatre next to the showgirl.

Some more bad American accents and the showgirl with some hard to remember name points a fake gun at them and wants answers.

The Doctor pulls some stuff together to detect where the dna of the jellyfish comes from while the others go back to Hooverville and plan to rescue the people underneath.

The black guy who is Hooverville's leader tells the Doctor that he couldn't do anything about the kid because he was scared. Huh? What kind of leader says that? What kind of guy says that anyway? Bloody chick flick.

Martha and the showgirl chat about love and unrequited love. AAARRGGGGH!

The leader returns to Hooverville and gets some people together to try and rescue the others while bits of Dalek are being added to the top of the Empire State Building in the freezing wind and rain. Funny that the hats of the workers don't come off.

The pigmen have the boss captured and Dalek Sec opens his casing to pull the human in for a much needed hug. He closes the case for some privacy and then there is a lot of moaning and groaning with steam and smoke pouring out of the casing. Can a Dalek look excited?

The Doctor analyses the jellyfish and realises it is from Skaro while we get to watch some showgirls dancing.

The song being sung includes a line "You lured me in with your cold grey eyes" and the camera focuses briefly on Martha.

The showgirls see the incomplete pigman and scream. Then Martha chases after him and another pig captures her.

Martha gets taken down for processing. Sec becomes a Dalek human Hybrid and the Doctor conviently joins the group without any of the super intelligent Daleks noticing.

No, I didn't like this episode. I can't even write the rest of this review. Maybe the next episode will be better. The trailer seems to show more of the usual Doctor Whoish style we've come to know. I even watched that terminably long Doctor Who confidential in the hope of getting some info on some things I missed. Uh, uh. Avoid the Confidential too. Chick flick style documentary.

Other notes.

The Black Dalek made an emergency temporal shift in last year's episode Doomsday. It ended up in 1930s New York where it began experimenting on the locals, turning them into Pig Men. It is hiding underneath the Empire State Building trying to build an army. In the first episode we get to meet lots of characters, like the boy who's boyfriend turns into a pig, or lots of bad American accented dancers. Martha and the Doctor end up in the sewers being chased by Pig men, then Daleks. How is the Doctor going to get rid of them with the limited technology at his disposal in the 1930s?

Rumoured that the Dalek's plan is to create a Dalek virus that turns all humans into Daleks.

Lots of Daleks flying through the air and shooting people. Great special effects. Note earlier start time.
