The TARDIS wardrobe
Christmas Invasion and New Earth, |
This has got to be one of the best beginnings to a Doctor
Who story ever. Mickey and Jackie hear the TARDIS dematerialisation noise
and rush out to find where the TARDIS has landed. But it hasn't. It appears
in mid air above them, spins out of control and crash lands near some bins.
A stranger steps out and recognises them instantly but Rose needs to tell
them that he's the Doctor.
The 1 hour special covers a lot of ground. Sycorax warriors using blood control use all the A positives of the Earth as hostages, the Doctor, Rose, Jackie and Mickey being attacked by a killer Christmas tree, Harriet Jones Prime Minister talking about Torchwood at Unit Headquarters. Sword fighting, Time Lord Gift explanations and more. This episode is really a fan story and contains regeneration references, more information about the Doctor (two hearts) and some Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy Humour. If you're a huge fan of the series and have watched almost every episode since Unearthly Child, then you'll definitely appreciate the subtle references in this one. Russell T Davies does us proud with a great explanation for being able to understand alien languages via the Doctor. His story pulls all the references and threads in episodes and books together, and I'm sure the Big Red Threatening Button is sure to get the rounds in fan publications. The down side is that there is a bit too much weepy, Rose in love with the Doctor stuff but that's what pulls the female crowd in so some of us guys will have to pretend not to be crying. Another downside was, because this is the Doctor's regeneration episode, he's stuck in pajamas in bed being tended to by Jackie for much of the episode, while Rose and Mickey try and fight the Sycorax on their own - worthy attempts but hardly the Doctor.
The Doctor eventually sees the Sycorax ship off but not before another mention of Torchwood. You'll have to wait and see what happens next if you haven't seen it already. I rarely watch anything more than once but the Christmas Invasion is definitely one that deserves a second viewing. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. |
